Charlie Kaufman’s movies are radical therapy

When Spike Jonze’s oddball fantasy movie Being John Malkovich was first released back in 1999, people weren’t sure what to make of it. While the film was well-received, garnering praise for its “endearingly nutty” and “brilliantly inventive” writing, it also left viewers confused about what to make of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, at the time known solely for his work on TV comedies like The Edge and The Dana Carvey Show.

'Interior Chinatown' Encourages Audiences To Come for the Surrealism, Stay to Hate Your Role in the Story- Review - Geeks Of Color

*Note that this is a review of the first five episodes of Interior ChinatownWhen you watch an episode of a Law and Order-style police procedural, there are certain roles that everyone is forced to play. Miles Turner (Sullivan Jones) and Sarah Green (Lisa Gilory) are the lead detectives who always solve the toughest cases and look good while doing it. Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) is the rookie, ambiguously Asian cop assigned to work with Turner and Green because she’s the “Chinatown expert” despite kn...

‘Look Back’ Is a Gorgeous and Moving Animated Movie - Review - Geeks Of Color

“Then why do you draw Fujino?” This is the last line in Look Back, the highly anticipated anime adaptation of the Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man, Fire Punch, Goodbye, Eri) manga of the same name, and it is arguably the most crucial line in the whole film. It’s a line that excellently summarizes the central plot and conflict of the film. It’s a sentence that perfectly defines Fujino’s character, desires, motivations, priorities, and, most importantly, her relationship with Kyomoto. Most important...

Hi all, it's been a while since my last video, but since Ghibli Fest came and went, I figured I come back from the grocery store and deliver another pep talk disguised as a Whisper of the Heart video essay. I hope you all enjoy it!

I’m Thinking That I’m Too Stupid to Understand “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”

The following film criticism contains major spoilers for the film I’m Thinking of Ending Things as well as references to suicide.
Netflix’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things is without a doubt one of the strangest, most out-there films I have seen in a long while, not just in 2020. I watched the film with a couple of friends, and once the end credits rolled, all we could say to ourselves was, “What the fuck?” This is a film that can be incredibly frustrating and confusing at times. It is also a mov...

‘The Boy And The Heron’ Isn’t Just A Masterpiece; It’s The Ultimate Culmination From A Master - Review

When The Boy and The Heron (the original Japanese title being How Do You Live?) was in development, it was originally thought to be the final film by legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki. This has now proven false as both Ghibli Vice President Junichi Nishioka and the film’s producer Toshio Suzuki have publicly stated that Miyazaki is already planning to work on a new film.

About Timothy Lee

Ever since I wrote my first review for his school newspaper, The Chicago Maroon, I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to be a writer. It was not only something I realized I was good at but was also something that could keep me creatively fulfilled more than anything. Since that realization, I have had the opportunity to write all sorts of things from film/TV reviews to video essays on my YouTube channels to op-eds for small news organizations to even scripts for narrative features like short films and games. Writing about all things pop culture is not just what I do best, but what I want to do more than anything, and hopefully the work that I have published so far can convince you that I am a voice worth noticing and paying attention to.
